The site came really close to coming down for good this week. A couple of weeks ago, after the nimda and code red internet worms hit, several cable-modem/internet companies announced they were going to start filtering their service to block inbound web traffic. This meant that the worms could be substantially slowed because all of the 150,000 or so people running web servers at home would suddenly be unable to transmit the worm. Unfortunately, that also meant that they'd be unable to serve web pages. AT&T and Excite@Home said they were going to do this, and Verizon's already been doing it for their DSL service. I didn't worry, because in the news article I read, RoadRunner said they had "no plans to filter the port" (or something along those lines..I couldn't find the article again). A few days later, at 11:04pm, all of my internet traffic ceased.
Reading my terms of service, I found I wasn't entitled to run a web server on RoadRunner anyway, so I didn't bother to call and complain. What I did was find an excellent, affordable hosting service. It took a while, because my needs are very special. I need ASP and over 300 megs of space, and ODBC database support. Generally, these things are only required by commercial sites, and can cost anywhere from $50.00 to $150.00 a month. For a free site that doesn't make me a single dime, that was just too much to spend. Luckily, I'm stubborn, and searched until I ran across ReadyHosting.com. For $99.00/year (that's 8.25/month!) all of my needs are met, and the site's came back online yesterday when the new site's DNS propagated enough to allow me to access it from home. Their service was easy to implement, and though I had to wait 10 minutes on hold for tech support (my site gave a 403-forbidden error for some reason), the technician was intelligent and had me fixed up inside of 5 minutes. Not bad at all for small-company tech support..I've gotten much worse support from Dell and Microsoft. I'd recommend readyhosting.com to anyone wanting to host a website…that's a recommendation, not an advertisement; I wasn't paid or asked to mention it.

Song update: In any case, I do have 25 tunes to add to the archive, as well as 8 recordings, but I'll be in and out at the Texas Renaissance Festival this weekend, so the music update will have to wait until Monday evening. Sorry folks! But I'm very glad the site's back up and will be in business at least another year!
